Welcome!

Welcome to the Stockdog Ranch, home of the Valley Center Stockdog Training Center.  I am located in Southern California, in Northern San Diego County.  I work primarily with Border Collies and their handlers, on both sheep and cattle.  The Stockdog Training Center is a 20 acre facility, with small enclosed areas for starting dogs, large fenced arenas for the intermediate dog, and a large open pasture for the more advanced dogs.

All of the herding breeds need a job to do; if you don’t provide one that is both physically and mentally challenging, they will often “create” their own jobs, usually at the expense of your landscaping.  If your herding-breed dog seems dissatisfied being a couch potato or just a family pet, then he or she may enjoy doing the work for which he/she was bred.  I work with students who have a variety of different goals–some need their dog to do ranch work, whether they have a 3 acre spread with a dozen or so sheep, or a large cattle ranch with cow/calf pairs; others find that both they and their dog enjoy quality time together, learning a new skill and developing a great bond, and look at their herding lessons as a great weekly outing; still others find their competitive side awakened, and pursue sheep and/or cattle trials at both the local and national levels.
